Gargrave, Yorkshire
At Gargrave there is chiming machine that has been unused for many years and not much is known about it.
It was built in 1952 by G and F Cope, who were clockmakers in Nottingham from 1845 until 1984. The company was then taken over by Smith's of Derby.
The machine was paid for by a trust in the village. It can be controlled either from the Ringing Room or from the Vestry and it has a keyboard so that it could be played manually as well. There are chainswhich can be wound up to pull the hammers off the bells.
It is hoped that this fascinating piece of engineering might be able to be restored.
